Liberal Family Update

Windsor Tecumseh —

Welcome to the first in a new series of weekly communications. After a great summer we will continue with the momentum of the Liberal Express and will be sending updates to keep you, the Liberal Family, informed of goings-on in the House, on the Hill and on the road.

Come meet the Liberal ExpressLiberal Express Update …
The Liberal Express is still on the road – at km 55,861 – following a visit to Northern Ontario from September 10th to 12th. The Leader listened to stakeholders at a roundtable on Education and Innovation, spoke to some kids at the Bruce Mines Fall Fair, and after a friendly encounter with an alpaca, met with farmers from the Algoma Federation of Agriculture where the group discussed, among other things improving connectivity in rural Canada and improving access to local and international food markets. Michael Ignatieff was met with warmth and enthusiasm at every stop, including a serenade at Elliot Lake, a motorcycle demonstration by the OPP Golden Helmets in Warren and a very enthusiastic and pregnant pig named Pumba who attended his speech in Sturgeon Falls.

Yesterday, the Liberal Team was in Shawinigan at the Festival Western de St. Tite and if you are in the Gatineau area on Saturday, join Michael Ignatieff and the Liberal Express for a BBQ with Steve MacKinnon, a soapbox race and yes, the bus WILL be there.

Check out the for posts and photos from the tour.

Save lives. Save the Gun Registry…
Save Lives. Save the Gun RegistryWith the crucial vote on the Gun Registry up in the House for Wednesday September 22, the debate continues in the media. The Liberal position is clear – Liberals are in line with Police Associations, Chiefs of Police, Police Boards, Public Health, Emergency Physicians, Pediatricians, Nurses, the YWCA and victims groups – Liberal MPs support and will vote unanimously in favour of the registry. With revelations that the NRA has been actively involved in trying to abolish the registry in Canada, House Leader David McGuinty spoke to reporters on Tuesday calling on the Harper Conservatives to come clean on the NRA influence on Canadian Gun policy.

In support of the Gun Registry, the Liberal Women’s Caucus joined by Mark Holland launched the "Save Lives. Save the Gun Registry" tour in Halifax on Monday. The tour made five stops this week in Halifax, Quebec, Toronto, Winnipeg and Vancouver to meet with stakeholders to cut through the myths and distortions being perpetrated by the Conservatives. Click here to take action to save the Gun Registry and here to read an interesting article from September 1st in the Toronto Star on the Gun Registry – which also includes the RCMP report.
